Email: Outlook Focused Inbox Feature

How To

Question:

  • How do I enable or disable the Focused Inbox option in Outlook or Outlook 365?

Answer:

Beginning in late 2017, Outlook 2016 and Outlook 365 introduced an option called “Focused Inbox” which separates your inbox into two tabs – “Focused” and “Other”.  Your most important emails are in the “Focused” tab while the rest, including what appears to be machine-generated and mailing list or listserv traffic, appear in the “Other” tab.

You can train Outlook on what email or senders you consider important.  For example, you can set all mail sent from metrostate.edu email addresses to display in the “Focused” tab.

Please note: If you are configured to use Focused Inbox, you may need to watch the "Other" tab for email messages from your classes until you instruct Outlook to always move those messages into the "Focused" tab.

Please see the following Microsoft Office documents for more information and instructions on configuring, activating and disabling Focused Inbox:

  • Focused Inbox for Outlook: Microsoft offers a brief introduction into Focused Inbox, how to configure it on multiple platforms and how to move messages between the Focused and Other tabs.
  • Turn off Focused Inbox:  You can learn how to turn off Focused Inbox here.

Additional Notes:

When Focused Inbox has been activated, you may need to follow the "Other" tab for email messages from your classes until you instruct Outlook to always move those messages into the "Focused" tab.

If you do not see the configuration options to enable or disable Focused Inbox, your version of Outlook might not be recent enough to include the feature, or your email site administrator may have disabled it.
